Candidates can find the requirements for appointment as an Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor (tenure track or tenured) in the Guidelines for Faculty Development in the Department of Small Animal Medicine, To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an associate or full professor, have achieved tenure at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrable national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.


The major responsibilities of this position are to teach and provide service in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, to teach pre-clinical lectures/courses to veterinary students, to participate in the training of zoological house officers actively, and to develop a research program, which can be independent or collaborative. Proportionate assignments for each area are based on the candidate's interests, faculty assignment, and the missions of the zoological medicine program and Department.


The successful candidate will join a zoological medicine service with two other faculty members, three full-time dedicated technicians, and three residents. The clinical work includes animals presented to the hospital and local field activities at two small captive wildlife collections. The current annual hospital and field caseload is approximately 1500 cases, comprising 14% reptiles, 40% avian, 45% mammals, and <1% amphibians/fish/inverts. The caseload consists of approximately 85% privately owned zoological companion animals, 10% native wildlife, and 5% zoo/aquarium species. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a state-of-the-art tertiary referral center and is well equipped with dedicated avian, herpetological, small mammal, and wildlife hospitalization facilities; digital radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasonography, 128 slice CT, nuclear scintigraphy, 3T and 7T MRI; chemotherapy and linear accelerator; flexible and rigid diagnostic and surgical endoscopy; microsurgery, radiosurgery, Nd-YAG, diode and CO2 lasers; large pharmacy staffed by qualified pharmacists; and access to all major veterinary specialties. In addition, there is a fully accredited clinical pathology lab on site and a state-licensed diagnostic lab on campus. Daytime and after-hours emergencies are seen by the emergency service, with support from the zoological medicine resident and faculty, and transferred to the zoological medicine service the following morning. The zoological medicine service is integrated into the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and enjoys a collegial working relationship with all major specialties. The Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery comprises approximately 50 faculty members, 51 clinical residents, 10 rotating interns, seven specialty interns, and three administrative staff members. Shared laboratory space and technical support are provided within the Department, and six dedicated research technicians assist in the research missions of the Department's faculty. Other specialties within the Department include anesthesia, emergency/critical care, internal medicine, neurology, nutrition, medical and radiation oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, soft tissue surgery, radiology, dermatology, and a community practice program (UGA Pet Health Center). The Department participates in the college-wide M.S. and Ph.D.
programs. Members of the Department also actively participate in highly successful collaborative efforts with faculty members from other departments within the college and other colleges on campus, including the College of Public Health, College of Engineering, and the Athens campus of the Medical College of Georgia. The Department has a strong teaching, research, and clinical service track record.
