Job Description

Job Overview: The Special Education teacher is responsible for providing instruction and support to students with disabilities in a self-contained, co-facilitated, and/or fully inclusive environment.  The Special Education teacher will work to ensure students achieve academic success, build social-emotional skills while developing independence. The Special Education teacher will collaborate with general education teachers, support staff, and parents to create and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEP’s) aligned with state and district guidelines. This position will oversee the Middle School Behavior Support room for students with special education needs.

Instructional Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement engaging, differentiated lesson plans tailored to the diverse needs of students with disabilities.

  • Adapt and modify curriculum to ensure accessibility and inclusion for all learners.

  • Provide direct instruction in academic, behavioral, and functional life skills areas.

  • Utilize evidence-based teaching methods and interventions to maximize student growth.

Special Education Programming and Compliance:

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop, review, and implement individualized plans that are in compliance with Rule 51 and district policies.  

  • Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals using data collection systems.

  • Conduct formal and informal assessments to guide instruction and evaluate student growth.

  • Facilitate IEP meetings, communicating effectively with parents, guardians, and team members.

  • Proactively teach and reinforce positive behaviors using evidence-based strategies.

  • Implement and monitor behavior management plans for students as outlined in their IEP’s or Behavior Intervention Plans. 

  • Use de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention strategies to maintain a safe and supportive classroom environment.

  • Collaborate with school counselors, psychologists, and other specialists to address student behavioral and emotional needs.

  • Maintain accurate and timely records of behavioral incidents, interventions, and progress.

  • Train and mentor paraprofessionals and support staff in implementing behavior management strategies effectively.

Collaboration and Professional Development:

  • Work closely with general education teachers to provide accommodations and co-teaching support as needed.

  • Collaborate with related service providers (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists) to ensure comprehensive support.

  • Maintain consistent and open communication with families about student progress, goals, and concerns.

  • Stay informed of current research, trends, and best practices in special education.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities and district-provided training.

Professional Duties:

  • Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, grades, and assessment data.

  • Prepare reports and communicate regularly with parents or guardians regarding student performance and behavior.

  • Participate in school-wide meetings, events, and other administrative activities as required.
