Summary:

The Spanish Interpreter will provide patients families visitors and staff access to employees who accurately interpret via face-to-face encounters during designated hours. Spanish Interpreters are bilingual and proficient in English and Spanish with the ability to interpret health care information to and from Spanish-speaking patients/patients families and Medical Center health care providers. Will act as a language liaison between the patient family and staff in support of the medical plan of care. Facilitates acquisition of Interpreter services for non-Spanish languages (via OPI/over the phone VRI/video remote interpreter and/or contract services).

Note : ** This position is PRN with v arying hours morning evening overnight weekend and holidays. **

Required Education & Experience:

• High School diploma or equivalent required.

• 1-2 years of experience in a healthcare setting with current knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.

• Previous interpretation/translation experience (preferred).

• Ability to precisely and accurately translate critical medical information from English to the patients native language.

• Strong interpersonal skills flexibility and customer service orientation.

• Excellent communication and active listening skills.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.

• Ability to interact and communicate with people in-person and over the telephone often in stressful situations.

Required Certification & Testing:

• Selected applicants must meet Spanish proficiency levels defined by Cook Childrens Health Care System and measured by objective and nationally recognized oral language reading and writing tests prior to employment.

• All selected applicants are tested prior to an offer being made to determine their Spanish proficiency level and must test at a proficient level to qualify. Testing will be administered by a contracted testing service. Spanish proficiency levels are verified as part of the employees annual review.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Health Care Providers is required within 30 days of employment and must be maintained.
