School Counselor/Learning Specialist, Grades 6-12 

(Full-time, 10 month employee)

ABOUT THE POSITION

The School Counselor/Learning Specialist is a full-time, 10-month position. The School Counselor/Learning Specialist provides a variety of mental health, consulting, and educational services to students in grades 6-12 at Castilleja School. The School Counselor/Learning Specialist works collaboratively with our counseling team, primary learning specialist, deans, teachers, and administrators to promote the cognitive, social, behavioral, and emotional development of all students. Areas of responsibility will include: consultation, assessment, evaluation, intervention, and parent education. 

 

Administrative/Collaborative Responsibilities

  • Serve as a bridge between our counseling services and learning support services. 
  • Collaborate with teachers, advisors, deans, and division heads to develop appropriate and effective interventions to meet individual student needs and serve on the student success teams of each division
  • Assist with developing classroom and individual student strategies/interventions for academic, executive functioning, social skills, and emotional support.
  • Act as a liaison to advise parents and faculty of approaches to child development, student learning, and behavioral and social challenges.
  • Refer families to and consult with outside agencies, organizations, and specialists when necessary.
  • Develop and/or deliver faculty training and professional development opportunities to support and address the community’s specific needs

Counseling Responsibilities

  • Provide short-term individual and group counseling services to students working through educational and/or personal adjustment issues. 
  • Provide occasional long-term individual counseling (generally due to special circumstances).
  • Provide crisis intervention and safety assessments.
 

Learning Support Responsibilities

  • Teach students how to develop effective learning strategies. Some teaching of personal, behavioral, and social skills.
  • Administer screener/pre-referral assessments to better understand student learning profiles and to advise students, families, and teachers.  
  • Interpret student evaluations and consult with individual teachers to help in their understanding and implementation of students’ learning profiles and individualized support plans.
 

Key Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in psychology or social work preferred, advanced degree in school counseling, social work, or related mental health field considered
  • Active California license as a clinician (LSSP, LEP) preferred
  • Experience in providing school-based mental health services, psychoeducational assessment, and collaborative approaches to working with school personnel. 
  • Knowledge of child development, latest education theories and practices, and current trends in education and professional development 
  • Strong understanding of learning differences and their interplay with the whole student; experience teaching learning strategies to neurodivergent learners
  • Knowledge of legal mandates regarding child abuse reporting
  • Knowledge of educational policies, laws, programs, and procedures related to educational and psychological services within independent schools
  • Familiarity with various neuropsychological and psychoeducational evaluations
  • Demonstrated experience and competence in a culturally diverse community including diversity of race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, language, family structure, sexual orientation, and gender identity

  • Castilleja uses a competitive salary scale, which takes into account the range of experience, education, and skill level. The yearly salary for this position ranges from $105,000-$120,000.
