Job Description and Duties

Under the direction and supervision of the Deputy Secretary for Communications and External Affairs, the Information Officer II (IO II) serves effectively as an Assistant Deputy Secretary and helps develop effective communications strategies and manage outreach and public information activities for the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA). The IO II has primary responsibility for significant components of our agency-level communications work, including developing and overseeing media relations and digital communications strategies.

As an Information Officer II you will have the opportunity to:

  • Serve as an Agency spokesperson on CalEPA’s various issues, programs and initiatives, leading on both routine and sensitive inquiries from the news media and stakeholders with strong interests in the Agency
  • Provide advice to Agency executive staff and constituent Boards, Departments and Offices on media and outreach strategy, including issue management and crisis communications
  • Maintain and cultivate relationships with members of the media – ethnic, traditional, electronic, and trade – that closely follow the Agency’s issues and programs
  • Staff CalEPA secretary as needed for speaking engagements and events
  • Develop executive messaging points that align with Administration priorities and goals
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to CalEPA Information Officer I, as well as information officers social media strategists for CalEPA’s boards, departments and office, to model inclusive communications, encourage consistency and support a culture of continuous learning and innovation

  • The ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative relationships with internal staff and work well as part of a team, as well as prioritize and schedule work efficiently is essential
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality, strong organizational skills, and adaptability in a fast-paced, challenging environment are vital attributes for the successful candidate

Statement of Qualification (SOQ) Instructions

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required for the hiring manager’s review. Applications submitted without an SOQ may be disqualified.

The SOQ shall not exceed two (2) pages. The SOQ must be single spaced, with 12-pt Arial font and have one-inch margins. The SOQ must contain a header listing your name and Job Control number listed according to the job advertisement.

Your SOQ should address the following:

1. Describe your experience with developing media relations strategies, both  proactive and reactive.

2. Describe your experience with writing and editing press releases and other  content for media.

3. Describe your experience with providing communications support to executive leaders.
