Job Summary:
Zymo Research is looking for a dynamic individual to join our Chemistry Team! We are seeking a highly skilled Organic Chemist or Biochemist with a strong foundation in chemistry and hands-on experience in bioconjugation, reagent formulation, synthesis, and analytical characterization. This role will focus on surface modification and functionalization of magnetic beads for applications in molecular biology, diagnostics, and life science research. The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of reaction chemistry, biomolecule interactions, and experience developing robust and scalable conjugation and production workflows.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Magnetic Bead Surface Chemistry & Conjugation
- Develop, optimize, and scale surface modifications of various magnetic bead platforms.
- Perform covalent and affinity-based conjugation of biomolecules, including proteins, antibodies, nucleic acids, linkers and other ligands.
- Evaluate and optimize ligand density, coupling efficiency, stability, and functional performance.
2. Reagent Formulation & Synthesis
- Formulate buffer systems, blocking reagents, activation chemistries, and stabilization solutions.
- Design and perform organic syntheses for linkers, crosslinkers, activated molecules, and surface-reactive intermediates.
- Develop and validate reproducible reagent preparations suitable for scale-up and manufacturing.
3. Documentation
- Produce documentation and data needed for product launch and marketing.
- Develop and write SOPs, batch records, experiment records and development reports.
- Responsible in tech transfer to manufacturing and assist in troubleshooting production issues.
4. Communication
- Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
- Meeting regularly with the research team to discuss project progress.
- Present findings internally and externally and contribute to research publications.
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or M.S. in Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, or related discipline.
- Strong expertise in bioconjugation chemistry (e.g., amine, thiol, click chemistry, EDC/NHS).
- Hands-on experience in surface functionalization and modification of nanoparticles, resins, or magnetic beads.
- Proficiency in analytical chemistry and characterization techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to design, plan, and execute complex chemistry workflows independently.
Preferred Qualifications: - Experience with bead-based assays (e.g., immunoprecipitation, nucleic acid purification, immunoassays).
- Familiarity with design for manufacturability, scale-up, and reagent stabilization.

Compensation, Benefits, and Perks: The estimated base compensation range for this position is $70,000 - $110,000 a year at the time of posting. Actual compensation details will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors.
