The Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) is the School of Social Sciences' newest department. It builds off the 40 years of success and history of the USP Program as one of UC San Diego's leading interdisciplinary programs; it is widely acknowledged as one of the best of its kind in the nation based on the caliber of its faculty and alumni. DUSP offers two undergraduate degrees: the B.A. in Urban Studies and Planning and the B.S. in Real Estate and Development. Both degrees are rigorous requirements including a final capstone project. DUSP faculty and students have deep connections and collaborate frequently with community and industry partners. Faculty also have active grant writing and research portfolios through the Bioregional Center for Sustainability Science, Planning and Design (aka Bioregional Center). The Bioregional Center provides a transdisciplinary workspace and knowledge networking hub for theory-building, civically engaged research, innovation, pedagogy, and communication. The new transition to departmental status will enable all facets of USP to grow in the coming years and it is anticipated the student enrollments will continue to increase and faculty research portfolios will also expand.
The Community Engagement and Education Specialist (CEES) plays a central role in supporting impactful, community-engaged educational programs that are co-designed and collaboratively operated by UC San Diego’s Convergence Research Institute (CORE Institute) and Bioregional Center for Sustainability Science, Planning and Design (BioREG Center). The CEES position focuses on facilitating, growing, managing and evaluating the ROOTED Pedagogy Program (Research Opportunities Optimizing Teaching and Engagement through Data Collection) and the AGILE Network (Advancing Green Infrastructure for Learning and Equity). Both of these programs are creating hands-on learning and data-driven research opportunities for students and community partners interested in strengthening sustainability, social and environmental justice.
The incumbent provides work direction to student teams from multiple courses offered at UC San Diego. Fosters integrated student and community engagement through experiential learning activities focused on topics like food systems, green infrastructure, and climate resilience. Assists in the design, implementation, and refinement of Rooted Pedagogy + Data Science curriculum components, integrating feedback from students and community participants to enhance program relevance and educational outcomes. This effort contributes to UC San Diego’s Course Development and Instructional Program (CDIIP).
To amplify program impact within the university, the CEES will connect with UC San Diego’s Seventh and Eighth Colleges -- maintaining active communication with Provosts, while collaborating with the Teaching + Learning Commons. They will also coordinate with faculty across disciplines, including Social Sciences, Data Science, Health Sciences, Climate Science, and Engineering, to foster convergence research opportunities that promote student interest and success.
While not directly responsible for budgeting, the CEES will provide valuable insight during grant-seeking efforts and planning discussions. They will also design training components for Undergraduate Instructional Assistants (UIAs) and interns, equipping them with essential skills in data science, data justice, and community engagement. By leveraging the university’s robust evaluation resources, the CEES ensures that CORE-BioREG programs remain innovative, interdisciplinary, and responsive to the needs of both UCSD and the wider community.
