The Human Performance & Sport Science Center ( HPSSC ) serves the University of Michigan through the promotion and amplification of sport science research and education to generate new knowledge to inform human health and performance. We are looking for someone with sport science experience who is motivated to educate the next generation of sport scientists.  You will join our team and promote an inaugural collaborative initiative within the University of Michigan Athletics Department to support a new, student-facing experiential learning programming that integrates sport and performance education, research, and applied activities within the Athletics Department.


The Athlete Innovation Program Coordinator will be responsible for oversight of student engagement, delivery of educational material surrounding student technology and assessment roles, and oversight of on-site performance assessments of U-M student athletes in a newly developed HPSSC Athlete Innovation Lab ( HAIL ) . 

Additionally, this role will be responsible for integrating ongoing student collaborations with U-M Athletics (e.g. School of Information Data Analytics programs) with the newly created Athlete Innovation Initiative, an experiential learning program. This newly created position will report to a HPSSC Co-Director, with collaborative guidance and oversight from the HPSSC Program Officer and Athletic Department leadership. 

The Athlete Innovation Program Coordinator role is full-time and onsite at the Ann Arbor, MI Campus. Initiate Infrastructure:

  • Equip HAIL lab for athlete assessments.
  • Develop communication framework for engagement opportunities within Applied Sport Science Technology.
  • Assist in creating inclusive, accessible onboarding and educational content.

Oversight of Thematic Areas:

On-Field Data Analytics:

  • Organize student placements for data analytics and device management with athletic teams.
  • Act as liaison between staff and students, providing oversight, training, and mentorship.

In-Lab Performance Assessments:

  • Conduct and schedule lab assessments for physiological and biomechanical metrics
  • Develop skill-based training curricula and manage student training in lab assessments

Community:

  • Coordinate regular meetings and information sharing sessions for students with HPSCC Co-Director and U-M Athletics personnel.
  • Supervise and direct community-building activities such as workshops, events, and seminars.

Strategy Building and Programmatic Assessment:

  • Design program framework for recruitment, evaluation, and training.
  • Evaluate the initiative and plan for improvements with relevant stakeholders.
  • Engage in stakeholder conversations to innovate and implement new sport science technologies.
  • Consider developing new sport science curricula supporting HPSSC priorities.
  • MS or PhD degree in kinesiology, exercise science, nutrition, exercise physiology, psychology, sports medicine, sport science, or a closely related field, including at least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in biomechanical and/or metabolic assessment protocols and associated device management.
  • Experience with sport wearable sensor data collection, management, and insight extraction (e.g., Catapult) and relevant experience in coding for analytics purposes.
  • Experience with athletic and performance data structures
  • Knowledge of current sports performance research, statistics, and strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentorship and educating students in the sport science field.
  • Proven success with contributing to a positive workplace culture, and ability to consistently demonstrate our school's Core Values .
